All stats current as of release 0.15.3

The Avar was a planned Clan Aerospace fighter and became a playable asset in the 0.8.3 patch. It is the Clan equivalent to the Sparrowhawk - a fast, cheap and light aerospace asset that can fill a variety of roles depending on which variant is used.

Note in Stats the; Maneuverability / Max Speed / Optimal Turning Speed, between the 3 different classes.

Roles and Gameplay Hints

Prime

A solid Prime variant, this Avar Fighter packs a heavy punch with a versatile loadout. Main weaponry is a single Air CERLL and two Air CERML, providing highly accurate fire out to long range. Additionally, this variant carries two Air SSRM2 launchers, which lock on out to 600m. This armament is also surprisingly powerful against ground assets, making this a versatile fighter for many situations. Air GECM keeps radar presence low, but 5 DHS can struggle to keep up with weapon and after-burner use.

Variant A "Viper"

A far simpler Fighter than the Prime, this Avar is a dedicated anti-air platform. The primary punch is provided by a CLBX5, providing bursts of damage out to long range. Supplementing this is a pair of Air UAC2 in the wings, reaching out to extreme distances with rapid fire. Combined with the Avar's excellent handling and BAP, this variant is an excellent hunter in the skies. These weapons are lacking in Air to Ground performance however. In addition, the Air UAC2 are mounted far outboard on the wings, sometimes preventing both guns from hitting the target. As well, zero free tonnes can result in running dry over long engagements.

Variant B

The B variant of the Avar is a different flavour of Fighter from the A and Prime, and carries mixed armament combining direct fire with quick tracking missiles. The primary weapons are twin Air CMPL, providing rapid fire under 400m. Supporting this array are a pair of Air ATM3 launchers, reaching out to 750m. Pilots can continually harass their targets with the quick reloading ATM3s while pouring pulse laser fire into them under the cover of GECM. Staying of the tail of the wounded targets is facilitated by the Avar B's excellent maneuverability. Air to Ground performance is fairly minimal on this variant however.

Variant C

A unique attacker variant, the Avar C is a multirole support platform. Housing two Air LRM10 it can lock-on to it's target at 1000m while lining up a bombing run with the single Laser Guided Bomb. Used in tandem creates a devastating blow to your enemy. Alone and slower moving targets can be easy pickings for the Avar C. Its HLL is also not a trivial weapon to ignore, although keeping it on target for its entire burst requires a very steady hand. Helping to finish off fleeing enemies is where the two Air CERSL come into play, hold steady on target for maximum burn. 5 DHS may seem like enough heat sinks but a watchful eye on your temps is advised.

Variant D

A stealthy hunter for both ground and air targets, the Avar D stands out by being able to hit targets up to 700m away with its burst firing air large pulse laser, then closing the distance to dumbfire its short range missiles multiple times in one pass and finally carpet bomb with its single cluster bomb causing significant damage. Use your GECM advantage and vary your approach vectors, maximizing the chance of a successful pass without receiving too much counter-fire.

Variant E "Frosty"

The E variant can use its ERPPC as a long range sniping tool on slower ground targets, harassing them from afar without closing the distance. Yet, if the pilot so chooses, he can get close and personal with the potent combination of the twin air SRM4 and scalpel-like dual air heavy medium lasers. They have different target leading requirements, so be wary on your approach vector - best to swing around to the rear of your target. The high explosive bomb can be tricky to use against all but the slower assets. Taking out enemy air assets with the E can be difficult if they're highly maneuverable.

Variant F "Wadjet"

The Avar F bomber is a direct-fire platform, using its combination of high DPS weapons in a single pass. Waiting till the distance closes under 400m allows for maximum damage from its dual Ultra Autocannon 5, its twin heavy small lasers and finally its air SRM6. Lining up a successful high explosive bombing run can be tricky on all but the slower targets.

Variant G "Pilum"

The final variant of the Avar, this Bomber packs a high direct fire punch for its weight class. Primary weapons consist of one air Gauss and a pair of air ER medium lasers. In an alpha strike, this can deal major pain to ground targets, while the ER lasers can somewhat harass other air assets if opportunity arises. Filling out the Bomber criteria, a Bomb (CL) dispenser and 1 free ton allows for repeated bombing runs while out on sorties. As this variant mounts a GECM electronics package, it allows it to stealthily snipe slower or stationary targets at long range while plotting the best hidden approach vector to release its cluster bomb.

Canon

The Avar is a Clan light-class omnifighter. Although an old design, it has nevertheless remained among the Clans' arsenal due to its highly flexible and adaptable nature. The design lacks the maneuverability of many other aircraft in its weight class, and carries average armor, but makes for its shortcomings with fourteen tons of pod space. Its Prime configuration mounts a single Streak SRM-6, an ER Large Laser, and three Medium Pulse Lasers. This solid design offers few surprises, one reason for its lack of popularity with its unpredictable Clan pilots. Commanders, however, appreciate the design as a workhorse that usually gets the job done—as long as its pilots remember that the Avar, with its substantial omni-pod complement, is still only a light fighter.
