Similar to the boost that's available on tanks, Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry or MASC, allows a Mech to move much faster at the expense of generating excess heat. MASC is engaged by simply holding the [Left Shift] key while moving, and will grant a speed boost to your movement speed, but will reduce a units turning radius.
Care must also be taken when using MASC, especially in conjunction with Jump Jets or Energy Weapons, as this can result in dangerous amounts of heat. It's advised to disengage MASC in anticipation of any combat, in order to cool down enough to use your weapons safely. Seasoned Pilots are able to ride the yellow line of their temperature gauge by feathering it's activation, while novices with a 'Lead Pinky' will often find themselves overheating in difficult situations.
Units equipped with MASC are great for capturing bases in Terrain Control, hit & run tactics, and excel in harassing slower chassis, like Assault Mechs.
MASC can be pulsed or feathered sporadically to give short, nearly instantaneous bursts of speed that can make it difficult for enemies to aim.
All Shadowcat and Black Lanner mechs' are mounted with MASC.
Canon
Introduced in 2740 by the Terran Hegemony, the Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry (MASC) is a piece of equipment that allows a BattleMech to move at twice its walking speed. However, actuators were not built for this kind of stress, and prolonged usage of MASC systems can damage the leg actuators of a BattleMech. Although this is unlikely to immobilize the BattleMech, the danger of destroyed actuators is enough for cautious warriors to limit their use in battle. Wiser MechWarriors thus prefer to engage MASC only intermittently, to avoid transforming their speed demon into a tangle of ruined limbs and a target for enemy units seeking easy prey.
MASC was one of the many pieces of Star League technology that became LosTech in the Inner Sphere during the First Succession War, becoming extinct in 2795.
