The Heat protection system has been introduced to deepen the Battle Techque immersion typical for the genre. It plays on the assumption that manual overrides provide opportunities to tap deeper into the asset's resource pool.

The game default heat protection override key is [h]. Per default the system is on and will shut down the mech should a certain heat threshold be over stepped.

Since plain shutdown midst combat or reconnaissance might adversely impact the mission objectives, there is a threshold, just below the shutdown levels, where some (namely weapons) systems get disabled, or locked out, to decrease the heat output for the while the asset still could manage to reach safe levels without an actual shut down.

Since for that while the MASC and Jump Jets remain active it is possible to both try flee into a cover for the cool down, or blatantly overstep the next threshold and invoke the forced shutdown.
Being exposed to enemy rage, fire and frown can be a mind humbling experience, best avoided by copious amounts of flushed coolant. Another option is to disable the safety (press [h] key) and risk to blow up altogether, but at least, avoid the humiliating event of a sitting duck under heavy fire.
