The version of our interest is not the last one, but the 2.79b. The version requirement for blender isn't as stringent as in other cases, but there is little gain in using any older then the 2.79b and the later 2.8 and onward has no plugins we're aware of for preparing the objects as a group and fixing the geometry issues (degenerate faces and edges with multiple faces attached to it).
